The legislative power shall be vested in the Congress of the United States...
Those words from Article I of the U.S. Constitution laid the foundation for the role of the national/federal legislature which belongs to the bicameral [two house] legislature in Washington, D.C. Based on what you learn this week about the U.S. Congress answer each of the following questions:
[A] Which house of Congress [Senate or House of Representatives] is more powerful considering every responsibility they each have?
[be specific and explain yourself]
[B] Which job of a member of Congress is more difficult: making laws or representing people from your state/district?
[explain your answer]
[C] Is the Congress powerful enough to balance the power of the executive branch?
[if so, explain using examples; if not, explain using examples]

[A] I think that the Senate is more powerful because they have a longer term in office and because they are responsible for a whole state instead of a fraction of a state.
ReplyDelete[B] I think that making law is more difficult because not everyone is going to agree with them.
[C] I don't think that Congress has that much power because federal always wins in power and Congress is just a state power.
I'm glad that you joined the blog group this week Mr. Welch! I'd like you to take a look at your answers for [B] and [C] [especially C because it is unclear and incorrect]
ReplyDeleteA:The Senate has more power because they serve for a longer term so it gives them more time to do something and they represent the whole state.
ReplyDeleteB:I believe that making a law is more difficult because it is tough for everyone to agree with wht you believe in.
C:I believe that besides the president Congress has the most power because they can make laws have commites and basicall controll everything the presedent doesnt.

ReplyDeleteA)The Senate represents a state as a whole, and therefore are voted on by more people. The senate serves six year terms, compared to the 2 years of someone in the House of Representatives. So the senate may not be as quickly resonsive as the H.O.R. but they can get more accomplished during their time. Also the Senate has the sole power to ratify treaties, try impeachments, confirm appointed members of the Executive branch, and to filibuster.
ReplyDeleteB)In my opinion representing a state or district would be more difficult. I say this because there is no way you could please everyone. And you also have to consider what is best for the people (even if what is needed is not what they want) and weigh the effects of each decision you could make.
C)Yes, the congress to begin with has a major part in every decision made by the executive branch already. Their committee's advise the president in basically each aspect of the government. Also, if executive officials go wrong, congress has the power to remove them from office.
A. The senate has more power because they are in office for a longer period of time than the members of the H.O.R. Also they represent the whole state and the H.O.R represents a part o fthe state. Also the the members of the senate can fillibuster and ratify treaties unlike the members of the H.O.R.
ReplyDeleteB.I believe that making a law is the most difficult. That law may end up causing a lot of cauos. Also not everyone agrees with that law that you may have proposed or passed.
C.The Congrees has the most power than any of the other. Except for the president, he has the last say so in everything. Everything the president doesnt controll the congress does.
[A] I think that the Senate has the most power. The Senate more powers than the H.O.R because they have the power to filibuster anything that they don't see fit, they can just start reading out of the phone book or just about whatever. That is how they get whatever it is that they want. Also they confirm the people the president appoints into office, even though the president has the power to choose who ever he wants the senate has the power to confirm if they are in or out. Besides all of that, they also represent the whole state and their is only 2 of them.
ReplyDelete[B]I think that it is more difficult for senators since they have to answer to a lot more people than the house of representatives. Their is going to be many more people who don't agree with them.
[c]I think the congress has a bit more power than the Executive Branch because almost everything that goes through the executive Branch has to be agreed to by the congress or else it can't be passed. I think that besides the president they are a crucial part of decision making, since the president still has the power to veto any bills.
A:I would have to say the senate because they are over the whole state. Instead of over just one region like the H.O.R's, our senators try to get things done that would benefit the WHOLE state. Also the senators are there for four more years than the H.O.R. For example: (this wouldn't happen but..) A senator and representative both have the same agenda of what to do in their term. The senator has much more time; therefore, would most likely get a lot more tasked done.
ReplyDeleteB: I believe that making a law would be more difficult. Having to sit there and always trying to decide on issues that are difficult to decide on. ESPECIALLY if you are a senator because the whole filibuster thing could just make things worse. If a filibuster is used correctly, deciding on one law could take days.
C:I don't think so, and here is why. Yes, the congress is more powerful in many aspects, but if we didn't have an Executive Branch, no one would have a final say. For example: If congress, God-forbid, made a terrible law, and once it got up to the president he vetoed that law due to it's awfulness. Now if there wasn't an Executive Branch, The law would have been passed without any last say.
[A] I would definatly have to say the Senate because they have a longer term. Because they have a longer term, they have more time to make a change. They also are over a whole state rather than just a district which gives them the advantage to help out whole states instead of peices of states.
ReplyDelete[B] Law making is more difficult hands down. They have to create, or come up with, laws to please everyone. If they were to make a law that upset or angered people they could destroy their reputation. They have people to please and keep in mind also to keep those people safe.
[C] I would have to say they dont. I mean congress comes up with ideas, laws, etc. But all those ideas and laws have to be approved by the executive branch. So overall the executive branch has the biggest say so and more power.
(A)I think the US Senate has a harder job because they're in office for six years instead of two and they represent the whole state instead of a section.
ReplyDelete(B)I think both making laws and representing the people are both hard jobs because there will always be people who disagree with you and plus representing the whole state where there are tons of opinions and you just have to go to with your gut feeling.
(C)The COngress has the next to most important job because they have to go behind the President and do confirmation hearings and other things like that.
[A] I think the senate because they have longer terms and they have time to improve theirself. Also because there are two that has a responsible for all the state.
ReplyDelete[B] I think that the House of Representatives dose because they only serve for two years and the don't it's hard to pass laws for anyone in congess. Also if they don't do good the people could vote for some one else.
[C] Yes because they can override the veto of a president and also if the president sends the military overseas for anything. So the congress can brang them back if the don't like the reasonof the cause.
A:) The Senate is the most powerful because they severe a longer term and have more time to make an great change.. They also severe not as 1 but for the whole state.
ReplyDeleteB:) I personality think its making laws because if you screw up it just don't make the district mad it makes the whole state, and it also makes a differents on the way people see them. These people won't to be able to trust them and not be disappointed.
C:) Congress comes up with all the laws, ideas, and etc for the executive branch to look at so it a bigger task for the executive branch.
[A] I think that the senate is more powerful because they have alot more time in office and they rule over a whole state and not a portion and also because they have the power to Impeach things.
ReplyDelete[B] I think that making laws is the hardest one because you dont know if the law is going to effect someone in the wrong way or the right. So you always got to try and make the best laws that everyone thinks is a good one.
[C] I think that the Congress does have the most power because the congress gets to pass the laws. And they get to choose what our money goes to.
A.) I think the senate has the most power because they serve a whole lot longer than the H.O.R. The senate serves for six years and the H.O.R serves for two years. The senate has more time to make a good decision.
ReplyDeleteB.) I would have to say making laws is difficult because if you make one mistake on a law you can make alot of poeple mad. Also you have to sit there and argue why it should be a law.
C.) Yes, the congress is powerful enough to balance the power of the executive branch because if the executive does something wrong congress has the power to threw him out of office.
[A] The senate is more powerful because they have six full years in congress. While a member of the House of Representatives only has two years. If a senator displeases someone they represent, they have much more time to make amends to that person. The more people they keep happy or make happy, makes their chance of being reelected much higher. A member of the House of Representatives has to be concise but still please the people in the two short years they are given. If they cannot then their chance of being reelected becomes much lower.
ReplyDelete[B] Representing people would be a more difficult job because you are the one person people look to and have chosen to represent them. Making laws would be an easier job because it is a group decision; the majority of congress decides if a law is to be passed or not. So people cannot blame a single person for a law because it all depends on the majorities vote.
[C] Most definitely, Congress has the power to balance the Executive Branch. The Executive Branch has to report to Congress and Congress has to report to the Executive Branch for major events to take place. The Executive Branch can nominate who he/she believes will serve the people and country best in Congress. Congress can decide if the Executive Branch is serving their people and country the best they can and if not, then they can impeach the Executive Branch and try to have them removed from office.
[A]The Senate is more powerful than the House of Representatives, in my opinion. For one they represent an entire state and not just a single district but all the districts combined. On a second note, they serve for 6 years instead of 2 and they have more time to accomplish more. [:
ReplyDelete[B]I believe that representing the state is more difficult, because each mistake that a congressman makes is looked at and it's hard to present themselves highly. It's also hard to please every individual citizen, because everyone's beliefs are different. People will always criticize the work of others!
[C]Yes, congress is powerful enough to balance the power of the executive branch. By using Checks and Balances they can check up on the President and other members of the executive branch. Also if they don't like a law they can fillibuster until it is withdrawn. Members of congress can also override a veto made by the President, if they disagree with his decision. This infact gives them enough power to balance the rights of the executive branch.
A:)The Senate is the most powerful because they have a longer term, and they represent the whole state not just a district, unlike the House of Representatives. Who only serve two year terms, giving them less time to change things, and they are assigned to represent a district instead of the state.
ReplyDeleteB:)I think making laws would be the more difficult job. I think it would be difficult because a congressman has to be careful of which laws he or she supports. If they support a law that people dislike they will lose their popularity and probably not be re-elected. If they don't support a law people like it would be the same story. Congressmen have to be very in touch with what the people want and what laws they support making it a much harder job than just representing the people.
C:)I think congress is powerful enough to balance the power of the executive branch. Congressmen have the power to remove people from the executive branch, if they see fit, and they have the final say in who can and can't enter the executive branch. Their decisions about the people who may become members of the executive keeps the president from putting all the people that agree with him on issues from getting in an office, this keeps the executive branch from getting to much power. That's how congress balances the executive branch.
a. i think the senate has more power because the senators have more time in office and they also have the power to impeach people. The six years in office give them more time to make a difference rather than just two years and you have to have new people in office.
ReplyDeleteb. i belive making laws is more difficult to do because laws are such an important part in our society and if you dont make good laws then society will not function good so making laws is more difficult.
c. i dont think so because the executive branch is to important to have because it gives the president the final say and thats a good thing because if congress wanted to pass a crappy bill then the president can veto it and it could save a world of trouble
a.) I think the senate is more powerful because thay have more power. Example they have a longer term in office, their terms are 6 years and the H.O.R term is only 2 years. So if there is a problem then the senate don't just have to try hard to fix the problem quick because they have 6 years to work on it and the H.O.R only has 2 years.
ReplyDeleteB.) I think making laws is a more difficlut job for the members of Congress becasue the have to think hard about a law before they pass it. They have to look at all the aspects and benifits of that law to see if they really one th make that a law or not.
C.) I think the congress has more power because they are able to have committees, pass laws, and control almost everything else that the president doesn't control.
a.I would definatly have to say the Senate because they have a longer term. Because they have a longer term, they have more time to make a change. They also are over a whole state rather than just a district which gives them the advantage to help out whole states instead of peices of states
ReplyDeleteb. i believe that making a law is the most difficult. That law may end up causing a lot of cauos. Also not everyone agrees with that law that you may have proposed or passed
c. I don't think that Congress has that much power because federal always wins in power and Congress is just a state power.
A) I beieve the senate has more power because they serve for a longer time verses the H.O.R. which only serves for two years. This makes the Senate more important because they have a longer time to help the people they represent.
ReplyDeleteB)Representing people from your state/district is more difficult because you try to acomodate the needs of all the people who need your help. Many people come to you for help and it is your job see that their needs are met. This makes this job very difficult.
C) I believe that yes, Congress is powerful enough to balence out the Executive branch. The reason is, if a bill wants to be made, and the president does not sign for it, then the Senate and H.O.R. can override the presidents veto. This makes the Congress very powerful because they can over through what the president has said.
[A] the senate is mroe powerful because they serve longer terms and are over the entire state
ReplyDelete[B] making laws is more difficult because you have to think about how that law will affect every person under you
[C] congress' power is balenced evenly with the ecuative branch because the egulate each other
-- brandon Rubeck
[A] I would have to say that the Senate is the most hardest job, due to the face that you have to be in office for 6years. While being a representative you are only in office for 2 years. They have the power to impeach things. Also they are over alot more people than just a portion of people.
ReplyDelete[B] My opinion would be that making laws is more difficult. Because when you are making a law you can not please everybody so you have to be very careful of what you are going to cause when everyone knows. It could make alot of people mad and it could make alot of people happy.
But you deffinitely want to make sure you are picking the right law to make cause that is a major thing in the world is all the laws etc.
[C]Yes, the congress has most of the power other than the president. If a bill wants to be made and the president does not want to sign it, then they can over ride it.
A) The senate is the most powerful. Mostly it is because of their long 6 year term. Unlike the H.O.R which is only 2 years. Plus the Senate has the power to make/vote for new law.
ReplyDeleteB) I think it is the hardest to represent your state/district. If your mess up the guess what a lot of people will be piss at you.
C) The congress is the second best. I think the persident is the most important
A) i think that the senator has way more responsibilty because they are over way more people an you have to be in office for 6 years and a housee of rep has to be in there only 2 years also senators have more power.
ReplyDeleteB)i think making laws are more difficult because its hard to pass certain things because its not up to you its up to them to decide if your law should be put in act so therefore you just cant give them a idea and exspect them to put it in act right then.
C)Yes the congress are balanced enough because they have the power to see whos put in the executive branch and who enters it. so they should be able to balance out their own responsibilites.
i believe that the senator has way more responsibilty because they are over way more people an you have to be in office for 6 years and a housee of rep has to be in there only 2 years also senators have more power.
ReplyDeleteA:)I think that the senate is more powerful because the get to comfirm or veto new laws or inproved laws, and they get to stay in office longer than the H.O.R.do.
ReplyDeleteB:)Representing people in the district is the hardest thing because not everybody feels the same about the laws that the senate wants to make laws.
C:)yes, because if the president dont want to accept a new law the congress can override his opion so the congress has just as much power as the president but the president have a little bit more.
A) In my opinion the senate severe's a longer term and they can have time to change and make laws. It's more powerful also.
ReplyDeleteB) I think that makimg laws is the most diffcult because you make one mistake and the whole world hates you.
C) The Congress comes up with all the laws and ideas and etc. They have the option to either put stuff in or take out.
(A)The senate has more power because they are in office for a longer period of time than the members of the H.O.R. Also they represent the whole state and the H.O.R represents a part o fthe state. Also the the members of the senate can fillibuster and ratify treaties unlike the members of the H.O.R.
ReplyDelete(B)I belive making laws is more difficult to do because laws are such an important part in our society and if you dont make good laws then society will not function good so making laws is more difficult.
(C)Yes, the congress has most of the power other than the president. If a bill wants to be made and the president does not want to sign it, then they can over ride it.
A. In my opinion i think the senate is more powerful. They represent an entire state instead of a part of it. Also they have more time in office to get things done in their 6 years in office as opposed to the H.O.R. who serves 2 years. This puts more stress on them to get things done and use their time in office for good use.
ReplyDeleteB. Sure its hard representing people because you have to try and please everyone and do what is needed to meet their needs whether they like it or not, but I say that making a law would probably be more difficult because of the long drawn out process you have to go through. You still have to take in the consideration of the people with making a law. thats what makes it hard....you have to represent your state/district and present and get your bill approved and voted on to make it a law. There is much more to it than just making a law, your also representing your people through your bill or opinion.
C. I do not think so....yea they are very powerful but they dont have some of the big powers of the executive branch. The president is the one who gives the final say so in many situations and we need that for things. If we didnt have that person to represtent and make the final decision then we would be a very corupt country. If we left a lot of the decisions up to congress they wouldnt be able to come to an agreement on things. Like if the congress vote on a bill to be passed into a law and it is an awful law then the president has to represent and decide whats best for us and veto it. That is one of his overpowering powers over congress.
A. I think the Senate is more powerful because they have a lot more power, and they control the whole state. Also they can stay in office longer then the house of represenatives.
ReplyDeleteB. I think making laws would be more difficult because those descions dont just pretain to you. Everybody must be happy and understand why you choose for thoses laws to come in order.
C. I think the congress does have enough power because they can override the president about vetoing a bill. Congress in some situations has more power than everbody. Also congress come up with laws so that i sone reason why congress does.
A) In my opinion the Senate has way more power because they represent the whole state. The House Of Representatives (H.O.R) only represents only one Region. Also the Senate serves four more years then someone in the H.O.R. Members of the Senate also has the power to ratify treaties and can filibuster a situation. So there for I believe Senate has more power.
ReplyDeleteB) I would have to say that making laws would have to be the most difficult. The reason I say that is because there is no way one law is going to be able to please everyone who is affected. Also there is no telling how long it could take to pass one single law. It still has to go through the whole voting process. This would be the most aggravating to deal with.
C) I believe so because Congress has a major say-so in decisions that the executive branch has already decided on. If the congress doesn’t agree then the law will not get passed. But in the end the president has the very last say-so in any and all laws that are passes. If the president decides to veto a law be doesn’t like then congress has the power to veto override that decision.
