Crime, Deterrence and Punishment [Due by 12/4/09]
We have examined how government informs the public about new laws and regulations. Governments also expect certain behaviors from their citizens and address inappropriate conduct with certain types of punishments/consequences according to those behaviors. An alternate strategy has been to deter citizens from committing crimes with the threat of punishment. Based on what you have learned discuss your opinion regarding one of the above topics related to how the government deals with crime, punishment and deterrence. Make certain you support your assertions [opinionated statements] with facts and evidence.

i think that the system should make it where all the convicted murders and convicted rapist should recieve the death penalty. The murders are taking someones life away so their should be taking away too.The rapist are out here messing with people that dont wanna be messed with in that type of matter it takes a filty man/women to rape a person anyway they dont deserve to be in this world...or the men should be castrated before they let them out again.
ReplyDeleteWhen juveniles are convicted of a crime two popular punishments for them would be either juvenile detention or boot camp. In my opinion sending a child or teen to a juvenile detention center does not improve them or their behavior in any way. In a place like that the kid/teen would have no one else to associate with other than kids or teens who also have problems. From my experiences with kids who had been in juvenile detention they came out even tougher and rougher. So I believe a boot camp would be a better route to take when punishing a juvenile delinquent. At a boot camp they could find a trustworthy adult to confide in and build a relationship with, and maybe begin to look at them as a role model. Also there they would learn respectfulness and a lot of other important qualities a person should obtain.

ReplyDeleteWith the probation, I think it is pretty good with having criminals have limited everything. But my favorite and the one that I think is the most effective was the scare tactics where the criminals in jail for killing and arm robbery talk to the kids that are headed down the wrong path and are getting in trouble. I think the parole is wrong and the criminal that have killed and been in the for a like 10 years should get out. I don't care if they change or not they didn't get the punishment they disserve and was going to get. Who knows if they will go out and kill again. My opinion is that the killers and rapest should be dead.
ReplyDeleteI think if someone is a repeat offender and they just keep ignoring the law set up by the government, then maybe the courts should try sending them to a mental institute. They could let them stay there for a while because obviously there is something wrong with their minds that doesn't allow them to register that a certain act is illegal or wrong. And if that still doesn't matter to them or scare them some then they should just go ahead and let them rot in prison, get raped,or get ganged up on by other prisoners.
ReplyDeletei think that if you take your time to murder somebody then you should face the punishment. Rapist are a big part to they go out and mess with kids that dont wont ot be mess with. In cases like this they deserve the death penalty becasue if you are going to take somebody life away or even scar them for the rest of there life then the punishment should be even worse then what you did.
ReplyDeleteRapiest and murderers should automacially get life in jail. Because they are very sick people and will never change. But being on probation is a good thing, of having to be home at a certain time and being drug tested every so often all of that are good things. But kids who have to go to "juvy" is ridiculous I say. Because everyone who has been there has not learned there lesson and really hasnt changed. Well it changes them into being meaner etc.. But Scare tactics is the best because it is a good proventor of getting kids to "go good" instead of keep going down the wrong path.
ReplyDeleteI personally think that parole is absurd. Criminals aren't in jail because they were being positive, joyful, and nice to others. Criminals are in jail because they committed a crime that was deserving of incarceration. Having "good behavior" in jail shouldn't override the crime they committed in the past. Offering parole is like saying, "There you go. We know that you have changed since you killed that 14-year-old girl 25 years ago. You've been such a good boy! Go ahead, freely walk the streets among other 14-year-old girls, tempted just to 'slip up' again." Know I'm not sure what anyone else thinks, but the whole concept is utterly ridiculous. Parole should not be offered unless the trial has been found ineligible due to opposite convincing evidence.

ReplyDeleteI think the best way to punish a teen that is doing bad things and taking the wrong path should be placed in the scare tactics. Prisoners that has been in jail for a really long time and knows how bad of a place prison is, scare teens that think their big and bad. They tell all the bad and nasty things that will happen to them if they go down that path. I hope I never go to jail in my life after hearing the prisoners talk about it. I also believe that parole should not be a punishment because even though the prisoner has been acting right and being nice that criminal still committed a crime. If they let criminals back on the street they will be taking a risk because he could snap anytime and commit another bad cime.
ReplyDeleteI think that the scare tackted is a good way to help us provent teens to go out here and do bad things. Maybe if they did this to more teens there would be less crime later on. The criminals could scare them of things that have happen to them in prison/jail. Also what they did to get there, and talk about all the bad things that could happen to them and why they made a big mistake. I think they should do this in every school to show others about it.
ReplyDeleteI believe parole is the worse way to "punish" someone. Just because some has had good behavior doesn't mean they won't commit another crime. It is just like say, oh you've been very good, let's send you back out into the world and let you commit another crime. It is utterly absurb, in my opinion. I believe it should not be offered at all in a case unless there is no convincing evidence.
ReplyDeleteI think the best ways to punish juveniles is to send them to boot camp or use scare tactics. At a boot camp kids will learn to work with others to complete goals and learn important morals such as respect and responsibility. By using scare tactics kids will see how horrible life in prison can be. This will hopefully scare them into becoming a law abiding citizen, or force them to see the reality of how crime can ruin their lives. If these punishments are used more often I think they could really help people turn away from crime.
ReplyDeleteI think that a juevnille that is doing wrong doing and is getting in trouble alot should be sent to boot camp and/or scare tactis. Scare tactis show how bad and cruel jail is. Also the criminals that talk to you tell you how bad of a place it is and that you dont want to be in there. I was scared myself of jail when we watched the scare tactis clip in class. Boot camp is to straighten the juevnilles out and give them another outlook on life. FOr example some kids get sent to wilderness camp where you have to defend for yourself and you have almost nothing. Boot camp and scare tactics are the two best ways to set a juvenille straight.
ReplyDeleteI liked the idea of the scare tactic. That seemed to have an effect on the odds of adolescece going to jail. i think most teens who are at higher risk to go to jail should go to this program because it helps them realize how real and bad it is from those who are living through it. It obviously had an effect on some of those kids because they were scared to be in the criminals situation that they were in, so they tried to stay out of trouble after talking to them to not end up like the criminals. That sure would scare me out of doing anything wrong that would whined me up in jail. I think its a good program for kids to do if they have bad behavioral problems and those who cant seem to stay out of the principals office and that would cure them.
ReplyDeletei belive that our governments system is a fair one, people are given fair conquences for their actions and if they dont think its fair they can have another court review the case and have it possabily changed. Each person will respond to a type of punsihment diffrently. This being said there is no system without flaws. But the overall result is a good one and it helps better our community.

I personally think scare tactics are the best method in deterring crime. If you go around and tell kids what is jail is really like, it will most likely scare them. And if you deal with is this way thous kids are more likely to not go through the criminal justice system because they've had people tell them what its really like.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion I believe for a under aged person (juvenile), the best ways to make them not repeat a crime they already committed, or do a crime for the first time is either boot camps or scare tactics.
ReplyDeleteAt boot camps you are constantly getting yelled and being mentally abused. You have to be in great physical shape because you have to work out a lot. You have to learn respect of others and if you don’t then you will have punishments. Someone who has to go to boot camp learns a lot while they are there and in the long run I believe this is the most beneficial for someone who is troubled. Boot camp would be a very hard punishment and that’s why I think it’s a good way of keeping crime down in juveniles.
Also another way to keep juveniles from doing crimes are scare tactics. When we watched the video about how the real criminals came in and talked to the kids it had a great impact on me. They talk about what really happens in prison and how it ruins your life. People sometimes make prison to sound like not a very big deal. But the truth is it effects your life until your death.
These two punishments are very effective and that’s why I believe they keep juveniles out of trouble.
I think that the scare tactics was a great ida and I think that if they would do that with the juveniles that are always in trouble, then the population of people in jail could possible go down..instead of the jails being everything but over running with inmates...If someone would show them that being in jail isn't what it is cracked up to be then im thinking that the juvenile kids would straightin up and turn their lives around...
ReplyDeletei think that scare tactic is the best idea. If somebody is scared of doing something or if they are scared of what will happen to them if they commit that crime then they wont commit the crime. Scare Tactics especially are good in prison because for teens if they go to juevinile hall, they are going to have scare tactics used against them by the people who have been there. After they go through all that they will never want to commit the crime that crime or any other crime again. So i think that scare tactics uses the weakness that everybody has and that is fear, so it is a good way to stop crime
ReplyDeleteI believe that scare tactics is a good idea to prevent crime. Scare tactics work by people who are scared of going to jail and they commite a minor crime then they can go to a scare tactics which is where prisoners who have been in jail a long time try to scare the people from wanting to go to jail.
ReplyDeleteI think that scare tackted is the best possible way to keep people from doing crimes as well as keep them from repeating crimes they have already commited. For example if they take a group of teens to a jail and accualy give them the experiance of jail, it could possibly scare them into not commiting crimes and following the laws. So the goverment should continue to use scare tackted to lower crimes rates in the U.S.
ReplyDeleteRapper and murderers should automacially get life in jail. Because they are very sick people and will never change. But being on probation is a good thing, of having to be home at a certain time and being drug tested every so often all of that are good things. And kids who have to go to "juvy" is ridiculous I say. But Scare tactics is the best because it is a good proventor of getting kids to "go good" instead of keep going down a bad path.
ReplyDeleteI think for juvenile cases they should be sent to boot camp. Juvenile detention isn't effective at all. Boot camp will teach them to obey or respect the people in charge. It also teaches them to work with other people in order to get something done. This helps the kids more than going to "jail".
ReplyDeleteI think that parole is a good thing and a bad thing. Parole should only be offered to people that have been good in jail for at least half their sentence.
ReplyDeleteJuveniles who are under age need to be our biggest worry with punishment. They are the future of our nation and need to be delt with accordingly. I am a firm believer in a juvenile being sent to a hardcore military/detention camp secluded far from and civilization. These corrupt minded teenagers should never be sent to a jail cell. All they do is sit there and laugh about everything until court time where the plead to the judge that they learned there lesson. They should be out there being worked until they are about dead so they learn the qualities of life and what it takes to be a civilized citizen. Punishment should be the worst of the worst that cause so much pain that they will be guaranteed not to even think about doing a bad thing the rest of there life. We need to stop babying these kids and actually put them in their place when sentenced for a crime. The government wonders why a good percentage of our population are criminals, and the exact answer is we think everythings okay and treat everybody like little kids. Stand up and teach these kids a lesson. It will save our country in the long run
ReplyDeletePersonally, I think that Juvenile detention is the most effective way for the government deals with crime. So many young students committ small, less harsh crimes, and they are still sent to prison. By sending students to juvenile detention, this cuts down on costs and allows the students to see what a form of prison might be like. The government hopes that by sending them to juvenile detention, they will correct their life styles without the harsh punishments of prison.
ReplyDeleteI think perosonally no matter how bad the crime is the person should not have the death penalty. I do agree if someone has the done something so bad where they think the death penalty should be givin, they shouldnt. I think a life sentence in jail would be a lot better.
ReplyDeletei think like no matter how bad or less important the crimes are the person should never get the death penalty unless their a rapest or muderder. But overall a life sentence is the best route to go.
ReplyDeleteI think the best way to punish a teen that is doing bad things and taking the wrong path should be placed in the scare tactics. Prisoners that has been in jail for a really long time and knows how bad of a place prison is, scare teens that think their big and bad. If someone would show them that being in jail isn't what it is cracked up to be then im thinking that the juvenile kids would straightin up and turn their lives around...
ReplyDeleteI think that 2 of the best ideas are scare tactics and Boot camp. In Boot camp they are usually disciplined much harder and they usually end up giving in. I think they have a much better chance of changing in boot camp because they learn about respect and many other good qualities. I also think scare tactics is a good idea because like in the video, you showed us, they scare you into rehabilitating. In the video the teens were told all of the horrible and nasty things that could happen if you went to jail and all of the consequences that going into jail could have. So I think the teens have a higher possiblity of changing.
ReplyDeletei think the best way to punish a teen that is doing bad things is to put them in boot camp or in jail so that they can learn form there misakes and see if it can help them go down the right path. but you also have to look at what they did and how bad it was. if it was like rape then they should be put behind bars and if it was some thing like durg send them to a durg class and have them take drug test ever week and be put on probaison. you should try to help them. that what i think about it.
ReplyDeleteI think that to punish teens that are going down the wrong path need to experience scare tactics, because it shows teens how life in jail/prison is. People tell them their stories, and what there punishment is. They tell them that that can get jumped in jail, that they have a leader kinda. They say there are only a few people in jail who keep to themselves. The prisoners get all up in their face, and yell and scare them. The prisoners get the teenagers thinkimg about how they need to change their life, and make better decision.
ReplyDeleteI thimk that rapist and murderers should be put in jail automatically because their killing people or forcing them to do something that they dont want to do. I think that the scare tactics could really help kids because their being showed how they'll be treated in jail and I think that if kids go through that, that it will make them think about how they choose to go down the right path and not choose to do things that will wind them up in jail.
ReplyDeleteI believe scare tactics are well used to help prevent teens from making the wrong decisions. It works well because they get to have first hand experience in seeing what life in prison is truly like. It also give them the opportunity to speak to some of the inmates and hear about some of the situations that they have experienced or see happening everyday. I think it is a wonderful plan and it is very effective. I think it helps keep crime rates down as well as academic exellence rates up. This strategy is not used enough and should be considered in more situations in place of others such as juvenile detention and house arrest.
ReplyDeleteI believe that being sent to a boot camp would be the best and most efficient punishment to be placed on a criminal. It is the best because it has a long-lasting affect and makes the criminal think about his or her actions. Like when a child is punished and put in a timeout corner, told to “think about what her or she did wrong” and expected to not do it again. While that child is sitting in the corner, most likely he or she is NOT thinking about what he or she did wrong. The only thought is what he or she is going to do when the time is up. If the child is punished with physical labor, he or she is more likely to actually be thinking about what he or she did wrong. The whole time the child is doing the labor; thoughts of how the punishment came to be are sure to be mingling in his or her head. Anger would probably build because having to think why he or she is in the position, also makes thoughts about what was done to get him or her in that position. Kids do not like work and neither do adults. A boot camp is intense physical labor, so if a person is sent to a boot camp as punishment, he or she is probably going to regret doing what he or she did, deter and make him or her think twice before doing it again.
